MERCOSUR bets - still open

January 2026. The EU-Mercosur was provisionally agreed by a qualified majority, but lobbyists for the European beef and rice sectors continue to undermine the deal. After decades of negotiations and dependence on trade with the EU, individual Mercosur members are taking control of their own economic future – with the help of China. Bets are still open.

Includes detailed trade data on Mercosur states, product categories (beef, apples, chemicals), tariffs, transportation infrastructures, ports and free zones, as well as as investments. Special attention to Brazil, Uruguay, pesticide regimes, or Transparency International’s findings.

Read about fragmented trade blocs, build-up of national infrastructures, an interview with Fernando Mattos-Costa, Uruguay’s former agrominister and negotiator. Views from Brazil, Paraguay, and Argentina collected by B2Bioworld, and a clever move of Italian Prime Minister Meloni to stymie her Minister Francesco Lollobrigida aligning with the rice farmer’s veto to the Agreement. The European Parliament still has to vote on the Mercosur deal.Reading time: 43 min
